Guiding Principles

1. Grassroots

We contour our work to the needs and strengths present within our communities

As a grassroots organization, we design our programs to match the specific needs and strengths within our communities. In particular, we provide youth with access to the resources present within our communities that would otherwise be reserved for youth from privileged backgrounds. By doing so we enable youth from low-income families to lift themselves out of poverty.

2. Merit

We award scholarships based on merit, without bias or favor

We use a transparent application process based on academic merit and financial need to identify high-potential students who would otherwise drop out of school due to poverty. By conducting our selection using application numbers instead of names, and by awarding scholarships based on clear metrics we ensure our selection process is fair and equitable.

3. Gender Equity

We advance gender equity through a gender-inclusive approach

By providing scholarships to girls and boys in equal numbers based on merit and need, and by mentoring our boys and girls on the value of gender equity, we are working to cultivate a generation of youth who value one another as equals. Meanwhile, we provide additional support to help address the specific challenges our girls face based on their gender.

4. Synergy

We leverage the strengths of youth and the private sector to foster each other’s success

We partner with the private sector to recruit mentors, source internships, and identify job opportunities to which we can refer our alumni. By providing our youth with these opportunities our employer partners identify a pool of high potential, skilled recruits to help meet their need for growth. In this way, our work helps to simultaneously address the supply and demand sides of the employment market.

5. Transformation

We create a total transformation from poverty to professional careers

The work of preparing youth to thrive in their careers requires a steadfast, long-term, and holistic approach. This includes access to quality education, mentoring on the soft skills critical for career success, industry-specific career guidance, and links to professional opportunities. By addressing all of these essential needs Hatua supports youth through a total transformation from poverty to professional careers.

6. Systemic Change

We seed systemic change by cultivating professional networks

Even among well-educated youth, professional networks that arise from family members are often determinative of a young person’s employment prospects. Youth from low-income families, almost by definition, lack such connections. As our alumni build their networks within professional circles they act as bridges, connecting previously un-networked communities to professional networks.

Story:

In 2006, Peter Kwame and Gabrielle Fondiller carried out a research project on government policies affecting street vendors in Likoni, Mombasa. Realizing the widespread barriers to education faced by low-income families in Likoni, Kwame and Gabi began raising funds to pay school fees for students who would otherwise drop out of school. By the following year they had founded the Likoni Scholarship Fund and were helping 7 students to continue their education. Read more.

Now in 2022, Hatua Network is directly helping 731 youth, 333 students in secondary School, 252 in college and university, and 190 alumni who have successfully graduated from our program ready to contribute to and benefit from Kenya's growing economy.
