Hatua Network to Expand its Scholarship Recruitment to all Public Primary Schools in Mombasa County Thanks to If International Foundation

Mombasa, Kenya (July 5, 2021) Hatua Network is excited to announce its three-year partnership with If International Foundation. Under its Education Thematic Domain, the Foundation has pledged to support Hatua over the next three years and help it extend its scholarship recruitment efforts to reach all public primary schools in Mombasa county.

“Hatua is at a critical stage in its growth as we are building up to providing 750 scholarships per year,” said Gabrielle Fondiller, Co-founder and Executive Director of Hatua Network. “The International Foundation will make it possible for us to reach this exciting milestone while expanding our essential services to youth in need of equal access to opportunity.”

Since 2012, Hatua has been providing scholarships for financially disadvantaged students from Likoni sub-county. And in 2019, Hatua launched its scholarship program in Mvita sub-county, Mombasa. With this grant, Hatua will take on 380 new students across all Mombasa’s sub-counties, increasing the total number of youth served by 65%.

Furthermore, funds provided through If International Foundation’s grant will strengthen and improve Hatua’s mentoring programs at the secondary and tertiary levels. As more students join the program, the grant will facilitate the hiring of more trainers for Hatua’s holiday mentoring programs, and provide expert support to strengthen Hatua’s soft skills mentoring curriculum and make it open-source.

Alumni play a strategic role in Hatua’s long-term mission to end the cycle of generational poverty in Mombasa county. With If International Foundation’s support, Hatua will be able to boost its tertiary program and increase the total number of Hatua alumni to 265. This milestone will finally help launch Hatua’s “Network Bridge” program which aims to link more than 400 marginalized youth with Hatua alumni for educational or career advice.
